The 7th FIG World Challenge Cup Artistic Gymnastics which will be held from March 26th to 29th has received an overwhelming response from the public. The marketing committee of the Qatar Gymnastic Federation (QGF), which made the tickets available for free for the public through outlets at the City Centre and Villagio malls, have got a good response, with the incentive for the fans to also win prizes. The organisers have also approached all the private universities, the University of Qatar and many schools to attend the event and make it a grand success. |
Abdul Rahman, head of the marketing committee, has expressed satisfaction from the response. “The Championship will be really distinct in the seventh year, as we are trying are trying as much as possible to show that this championship is a manner of pride for the State of Qatar. This event will give an opportunity for the fans to catch glimpse of the world class gymnasts,” he said.
Rahman also said the championship has been provided support from all quarters and the arrangements have been made for the public to enjoy the event. The organisers have also extended invitations to embassies in Qatar. By inviting schools to the event, the QGF wants to them to get an exposure to sport of gymnastics and watch the world champions in action.
Meanwhile, Armenian and the Brazilian gymnasts arrived yesterday for the championship, having their first training session at the Sehr Al-Mani training centre of the Qatar Gymnastics Federation. The training center is one of the best in the region. It also has a medical clinic run by the Department of Physiotherapy, meeting rooms for coaches, and latest electronic devices.
The 7th Artistic Gymnastics World Challenge Cup is an annual event, which started in 2008. This year more than 150 world class gymnasts from 37 countries will take part in the event.
This is one of the seven World Cup Series events organised in the world. Qatar will host the second leg with the first leg having got completed in Cottbus, Germany last Sunday. The championship will be held for both men and women and after each event there will be a World Ranking lists for each piece of apparatus, six for men and four for women.
The competitions will feature qualifications, which will be held on March 26th and the finals – where best eight gymnasts per apparatus will feature – will take place on March 27th and 28th. The total prize money for the event is 50,000 USD, with first-placed apparatus walking away with 1,500 USD, while the second and third placed gymnasts with take home 1,200 and 800 USD respectively.
