The Tamu (Gurung) Society-Qatar recently organised a women picnic programme at Shamal Public Garden in Doha recently. The programme also featured a number of fun cultural activities. The Tamu, or Gurung, are a major ethnic group in Nepal.
Krishna Tamu, chairman of the society, presided over the programme. Other senior society officials and notable guests were also present on the occasion.
Appreciation letters were distributed during the programme to the people and organisations that supported the Nepalese Musical Fair in May 2013 and Loshar Special Programme. Those honoured include NRN-Qatar, Friendly Food Center, Cargo Net Service, R K Sharma, Purna K C, Narendra Bhat, Sagar Nepal, Bimal Subedi, Budhabal Tamu, Shan Tamu and Padam Tamu, among others.
A sports programme featuring a variety of competitive game events followed the letter distribution ceremony. Laxman Tamu won the title of Tamu King of the Year, while Som Tamu was the first runner-up of the athletic competition. Also, Tamu Sports Committee grabbed the first position with Tamu Cultural Family coming in second in the tug-of-war competition. Shiva Raj Tamu won the clay-pot breaking competition. Lastly, a Nepalese Dhaka Cap was provided to Saraswoti Tamuso and Mingma Tamuso, who came first and second in the Hot Potato Game.
A number of Nepalese women were also honoured on the occasion, including Taumaya Tamuso, Kalpana Tamuso, Pratishya Tamuso and Anita Tamuso, among others. The programme ended with lunch. — Usha Wagle Gautam
