Doha Film Institute (DFI)’s Brazil Cinema Showcase, in partnership with the Qatar Museums Authority (QMA), continues this month with the third instalment of the series featuring two documentaries - Only when I Dance by Beadie Finzi and Waste Land by |
The screenings will take place at the Museum of Islamic Art (MIA) auditorium on March 14 and 15, at 4pm and 7pm on both days.
In Only when I Dance filmmaker Finzi follows two teenage dancers from the favelas of Rio de Janeiro as they fight to take control of their own destinies by rising through the ranks of an international ballet competition. If they succeed, it could mean the opportunity to start a new life for their families in a place where there are greater options for the future and less chance of being drawn into the dangerous world of gangs
and drugs.
Waste Land is an uplifting documentary that highlights the transformative power of art and the beauty of the human spirit. Top-selling contemporary artist Vik Muniz takes the viewer on an emotional journey from Jardim Gramacho, the world’s largest landfill on the outskirts of Rio de Janeiro, to the heights of international art stardom. Muniz collaborates with the brilliant catadores, pickers of recyclable materials, true Shakespearean characters who live and work in the garbage quoting Machiavelli and showing us how to recycle ourselves.
The monthly programme of Brazilian films is presented in partnership with the QMA to celebrate Qatar Brazil 2014 Year of Culture. It was launched in January with a sold-out premiere screening of Walter Salles’s Central Station. The initiative will continue throughout 2014, presenting a selection of exceptional classic and contemporary films that highlight the rich diversity of Brazil’s cinematic history and bring audiences unforgettable works from internationally renowned
directors.
