Four arrested
for murder of
woman engineer
Four migrant labourers from north India were arrested for allegedly killing a female engineer to death near her office at Siruseri in suburban Chennai last week.
Uttam, Ram, Ujan and Indrajith Mandal, working at construction sites in Siruseri, waylaid Uma as she was returning from office on February 14.
They confessed to raping and strangling her to death and stealing her jewels, mobile phone and an ATM card.
Police were criticised for not registering the case until Uma’s body was discovered on February 22. They first arrested Uttam and Ram. They led the police to Ujan and Indrajith. who had escaped to their native West Bengal. A police team flew to Kolkata and arrested the pair from the Chennai-Howrah express train.
This incident has triggered a security alert at the Siruseri Information Technology Park that houses several multinational companies with thousands of employees who often work the graveyard shift.
42 children
rescued from
orphanages
Forty-two children were rescued from two orphanages owned by a non-governmental organisation at Royapuram and Korrukupet in Chennai last week.
The Social Welfare Department found that Anandhi Ammal and Davasi Mani, the institution managers, had recorded pornographic videos of the children.
The homes had violated the federal Juvenile Justice Act entitling orphans to government grants, were overcrowded and did not have proper inmate records.
The rescued children were sent to other homes.
In other incidents targeting young people, a 27-year-old government school teacher Arun Kumar was arrested for raping a teenage student taking tuition from him at Namakkal.
In Salem, a middle-aged medical college professor was arrested for texting lewd messages to his former student in Kerala.
In Coimbatore, twin brothers were arrested for drugging and raping their 19-year-old college mate at their residence in Edayarpalayam.

cricket scam
G Sampath Kumar, former Tamil Nadu superintendent of police, who deposed before the Supreme Court’s Mudgal committee probing Indian Premier League’s cricket match fixing last May, was suspended from his current employment in the Railways Department in Tiruchi district.
Sampath Kumar named top cricketers including Indian captain Mahindra Singh Dhoni, some senior police officers and Gurunath Meiyappan, son-in-law of Board of Cricket Control in India (BCCI) chief N Srinivasan, in the scam. He accused them of betting.
Though he too was accused of taking a bribe and demoted, Sampath Kumar remained unfazed.

Police are on the lookout for a trickster who swindled 200 job aspirants of millions of rupees by promising them employment at the Madras High Court.
Prabhakar Sathya Kumar, a resident of Tiruvallur in suburban Chennai, managed to convince people that he was a court employee with ‘influential’ connections for the past 35 years. He issued ‘appointment orders’ for sweepers, judicial clerks and other minions signed by high court judges and registrars.
He even managed to placate ‘selected’ candidates with excuses of legal delays. This continued until some candidates had their documents examined by legal experts who found mistakes in the order forms.
