UNHCR’s special envoy actress Angelina Jolie smiles as she meets with Syrian refugees in the Bekaa Valley on Sunday. Jolie is on a humanitarian mission to Lebanon to meet Syrian refugees.

Hollywood star and special envoy for the UN refugee agency UNHCR Angelina Jolie called yesterday for increased aid to Syrian children as the conflict prepares to enter its fourth year.

During her three-day visit, Jolie toured camps for Syrian refugees in Lebanon’s eastern Bekaa valley. She praised the UN Security Council resolution, adopted on Saturday, on humanitarian assistance to Syria, but described it “as a long overdue step in the right direction for the hundreds of thousands” in need for aid.

“The unity that the council has shown must not be a one-off, but the start of a new phase in ending the conflict,” Jolie said.

There are 3,500 unaccompanied children or children who have been separated from their families in Lebanon, according to UN agencies. Lebanon currently hosts nearly 1mn Syrians.

Jolie, who is on her third visit to Lebanon sine 2012, met with Lebanese President Michel Suleiman and Prime Minister Tammam Salam.
