HMC to conduct spine course

The course being organised jointly by the HMC’s Bone and Joint Institute and the orthopaedic surgery department will highlights latest trends in diagnostic and therapeutic strategies for patients experiencing spinal problems.

The two-day course will also provide an in-depth and state-of-the-art overview of a variety of spinal issues, including those common in Qatar such as back pain, degenerative disc prolapsed, and scoliosis (deformity of the spine).

Cases of failed back surgery, where the patient had an operation either in Qatar or somewhere else and experienced post-operation complications and spine infection tumours, will also be covered in the presentations during the course.

Orthopaedic residents, specialists, consultants, neurosurgeons, radiologists, physiotherapists, anesthetists, and general practitioners interested in updating their knowledge on the subject will be able to benefit from the course.

“This is a fantastic opportunity for all practitioners, who are dealing with the management and treatment of spinal injuries and disorders, to come together and benefit from the wealth of knowledge that will be shared by international and local experts in the field during the course,” Bone and Joint Institute director Dr Mohamed al-Ateeq al-Dosari, who is also the course organising committee chairman said.

“For HMC, this will be a highly significant event as it will reflect the corporation’s dedicated efforts to enhance its services and provide the best possible care to patients in all areas,” he added.

HMC orthopaedic surgery senior consultant and organising committee co-chair Dr Abdul Moeen Baco said: “The course will allow attendees to review their knowledge of basic spinal topics as well as receive the most updated information and learn how to incorporate the latest research and pioneering treatment options available into their daily practice.”

International faculty at the course include: Boston University School of Medicine’s  orthopaedic surgery assistant professor Dr Tony Tannoury, who also works at Boston Medical Centre in Massachusetts; Colin Nnadi, consultant orthopaedic spine durgeon at the Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre and John Radcliffe Hospital, Oxford; Dr Milton Lander, internationally renowned expert in interventional pain medicine, Wichita; Khai Lam, consultant orthopaedic surgeon, London Bridge Hospital; Mo Akmal, consultant in orthopaedic and spinal surgery at St Marys Hospital, London; Alejandro Mendez, neurosurgeon, regions hospital, Minneapolis; and Dr Francis Ch Kilian, Akademisches Lehrkrankenhaus der Universität Mainz.
