People with a university degree in Qatar are more likely to participate in sport-related activities, a new survey has revealed.
The Ministry of Development Planning and Statistics (MDPS) conducted the survey on its website that sought to identify the impact of Sport Day among residents in Qatar.
Some 1,006 people took part in it, out of which 33% were Qataris. The results showed that 74% of the total participate in sport, while 72% Qataris play a sport.
The survey results indicated that out of the total respondents with university qualifications, 78% are sport practitioners, whereas for Qataris with university degrees it was 61%.
Also, 66% Qatari females with university qualification participate in sport.
Walking and jogging are ‘most favourite’ for university degree holders; 64% for Qataris and 47% for non-Qataris.
The Qatari practitioners of sport who wish to lose weight account for 41% followed by those who seek to stay in shape at 32%, whereas the same motives are alike for the non-Qataris at 46% and 27%, respectively.
The survey shows that the 30-39 year-old age group comes first (36%) of the total sport practitioners in Qatar.
As for the Qataris, the age group (20-29 years) is the highest at 33% of the total Qataris participating in the survey.
Walking and jogging are the most practised sports among Qataris (59% of the total sport activities practitioners), whereas these represent 45% for non-Qataris of the total sport practitioners.
In general, weight loss is the highest incentive among females at 45% followed by weight control at 30%.
The spending of Qataris on sports (49% of the total Qataris), amounts to less than QR1,000, whereas those who spend between QR1,000-5,000 account for 18%, and 2% for those who spend between QR5,000-10,000, and 1% for those who spend more than QR10,000.
The ones who do not spend on exercising amounted to 30%. As for the non-Qataris, participating in the survey, 58% of them spend less than QR1,000, whereas 7% spend between QR5,000-10,000.
Further, the survey results show that 64% of the participants in the survey played sport on the previous Sport Day in February 2013.
As for the community participation, 57.9% indicate that it is excellent and very good, whereas 70.8% see that media coverage is excellent and very good.
