A study by Qatar University’s Environmental Studies Centre (ESC) has revealed Jurassic rocks in Qatar that contain the most economic accumulations of oil.
The accumulations amount to 98% of all Qatar’s oil production and lie deep underground at 13,000 to 17,000ft, the study found, with the most important inshore fields in Dukhan and offshore in Idd El Shargi and Bul Hanine.v.
The findings were presented by ESC acting director Dr Hamad al-Saad al-Kuwari at the ninth International Conference of the Jurassic Period held recently in Jaipur, India. The quadrennial conference, attended by over 100 researchers from around the world, discussed various topics relating to the Jurassic period that dated back 144mn years and lasted for 60mn years.
It also highlighted the economic aspects of Jurassic rocks such as oil, fossils and minerals. Dr al-Kuwari’s paper titled “Startigraphic and facies analysis of the Upper Jurassic Arab ‘C’ in Qatar” included research on the classification of the different layers and faunal content of the Arab ‘C’ which is considered to be one of the most important layers of petroleum reservoirs in Qatar.
Dr al-Kuwari said the study highlights the level of the research being conducted by the ESC to identify, document and preserve Qatar’s natural resources.
“It will present important answers for archaeology and geology students, scientists and researchers in Qatar and beyond,” he added.
