The popularity of National Sport Day has increased over the years and the country is now gearing up for the upcoming edition of this unique event, which is scheduled for February 11.
What makes National Sport Day unique, according to expatriates from around the world who live in this country, is that nowhere else is such an event held with so much passion and at such a huge scale.
The event is also indicative of the authorities’ efforts to promote Qatar as a worldwide hub for sports. Further, it is seen as a rewarding investment in human capital by a good number of businessmen.
Similarly, the Central Municipal Council (CMC) has affirmed its full support to the event and called upon all residents to use the opportunity to promote a healthy lifestyle.
“The expatriate workforce and labourers, in particular, are partners in the development of the country. So, taking care of their welfare and wellbeing should be among the major priorities of the country,” stressed Jassim al-Malki, CMC vice-chairman.
He called for the creation of special sports and recreation facilities to cater to the needs of members of the growing expatriate labour force, who live in this country on bachelor status. Al-Malki stressed that this category of people is key to any real development in the country and should be looked at as a valuable resource that has to be well cared for.
“The unique Sport Day is an unparalleled opportunity to get employees to come out and exercise for a better life. It is also good for business and I do not consider it as a loss of a working day; rather, it helps boost energy and lead to more productive working days,” said a senior Arab banker.
As infrastructure and development projects in the country get a huge fillip thanks to preparations for the 2022 FIFA World Cup, employers find it apt to attach special importance to sports and assign a particular day for it.
A number of activities are being lined up for National Sport Day at locations such as the Corniche, Aspire Zone, Qatar Olympic Committee Sports Zone, Katara, Museum of Islamic Art Park, various sports clubs /stadiums and industrial areas.
Many families that took part in the previous two editions of National Sport Day said they were keen to participate in the various events this year as well and grab the opportunity to have a good workout.
The mini marathon is among the major attractions of National Sport Day, whose activities are organised by sports entities for public participation or by companies for their employees.
