Two of my experiences in Doha recently have made me write this letter to Gulf Times.
The other day, I visited a government organisation and had to face a receptionist who did not know English at all. As Qatar is a magnet for international visitors now, it is essential that all government offices have receptionists who are bilingual. But at present there is no sincere attempt from authorities to bridge the language barrier.
The second issue is about the prejudice shown by some people to women wearing headscarves. I recently attended a job interview at a nursery where my wearing of a headscarf was frowned upon. This shocked me as I never expected to be asked to remove my headscarf to get a job in a Muslim country.

Appalling condition
Dear Sir,
I wish to express my disappointment following a visit to two well-known shops selling baby merchandise. Apparently, these shops are to house a baby’s feeding room wherein mothers could attend to their infants when instant feeding or diaper changing needs to be done.
My wife and I were extremely disappointed with the condition in which these babies feeding rooms was kept. The rooms were dusty, unclean and filled with boxes of baby products. The room was being used as a store and was in no condition to receive a baby and cater to its needs.
I urge the municipality to take action against these shops and the management to ensure that basic amenities are kept in a condition wherein its sole purpose can be served.

UN needs urgent reforms
Dear Sir,
The United Nations needs an urgent restructuring as it has failed miserably to fulfil its roles effectively in in several recent conflicts.
Instead of solving burning issues and bloody conflicts, the UN Security Council members are only interested in preserving their own interests.
Despite the killing of nearly 130,000 people and displacement of 3mn others, the UN has not been able to solve the Syrian crisis. In case of Palestine and Iraq also, the UN has not done anything good.
It has also failed to provide peace and security to millions of people across Africa.
Armed militias and rebel groups are making life miserable for ordinary people in many African countries.
