Dubai: The Board of Trustees of Mohamed Bin Rashid Creative Sports Award have selected Qatar’s Mutaz Barshim for the Arab Athlete of the Year award.

Barshim’s selection for the award came after he won the silver medal in high jump at the 2013 World Athletics Championships in Moscow. He also beat the Asian high jump record in the Diamond League in Eugene, USA.

The Board of Trustees yesterday announced the names of 16 winners in the fifth edition of the award which is dedicated to innovation in sports field. Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak, Chairperson of the General Women’s Union (GWU), and Chairwoman of the UAE Supreme Council for Motherhood and Childhood, was selected as the 'Sports Personality of the Year in the UAE' in recognition of her contribution to the support of various sports at the local, Arab and international levels.

The winners' list also includes the President of Asian Football Confederation, Sheikh Salman bin Ibrahim al-Khalifah (Arab Sports Personality), Moroccan Nawal El-Moutawakel (Arab Sports Personality), and President of the International Olympic Committee Thomas Bach (International Sports Personality).
