Al Shahaniya residents demand civic development

Several residents of Al Shahaniya have complained of lack of services in the area, local Arabic daily Arrayah has reported.
Calling for the development of the area, the residents pointed out that the sewage network was yet to be completed and there were excavations at several places on internal streets that lacked proper lighting, according to the report.
The residents also called for the development and expansion of the road leading to Salwa Road from Al Shahaniya. They described it as “death road” as it was considered one of the most dangerous roads in the State, the report added.
According to the residents, the road has only two lanes - one in each direction - and the 30km stretch is full of bends that make driving dangerous. In addition, they pointed out in the report, it did not have adequate lighting.
The residents said the road did not have any surveillance cameras installed along it, which prompted some motorists to drive too fast and in a reckless manner. Further, they claimed, sudden diversions on the road posed a risk to motorists.
Meanwhile, the residents referred to the poor condition of internal streets in Al Shahaniya. They claimed that speedbreakers - built by some residents themselves – did not conform to specifications and often damaged vehicles,
according to the report.

Legal action taken
against violators
of camping rules

Legal action has been taken against some persons for violating camping regulations, local Arabic daily Arrayah has reported quoting a source in the Ministry of Environment.
A number of camps were also removed as they had been set up before the start of the camping season, the source said, adding that officials of the Environment Protection Department continued carrying out inspection campaigns in different parts of the State to ensure that the regulations were being complied with.
According to the source, 150 inspectors carry out inspections in the morning and evening every day. However, they do not come across serious offences due to greater environment awareness, he points out in the report.
The most common violations are changing the location of a camp without notifying the Ministry of Environment and non-compliance with regulations such as setting up a camp at least 10m from the sea and limiting its size, the source said.
