The Hamad bin Khalifa University (HBKU), a member of Qatar Foundation for Education, Science and Community Development, and Mowasalat have hosted a workshop to discuss sustainable solutions for public transport and citizen responsibilities.
The event, titled ‘Planning and Promoting the Use of Public Transport in Qatar’, was attended by students from across Education City in addition to students and faculty from Qatar University (QU).
Mowasalat is undertaking several initiatives to promote citizen responsibilities for a sustainable future and greener environment in line with its commitment to realising Qatar National Vision 2030. Combined efforts such as these allow the youth to network with professionals such as infrastructure planners, developers and project owners and become part of the continual development process for mass transport solutions.
The event saw the participation of and presentations by HBKU and QU students. Mowasalat facilitated it by bringing in the director of the International Association of Public Transport’s Youth for Public Transport (UITP Y4PT) to share her experience and ideas from past programmes held across and outside the region.
Nasser al-Khanji, executive director of Mowasalat, said: “We mark our collaboration with the HBKU to engage the youth, urging them to evolve with Mowasalat for a sustainable future. Students are encouraged to generate creative and innovative ideas that enable Mowasalat to prepare and deliver their projects, products and services. This, in turn, promises reliable, economical and comfortable integrated services in the area of public transport and mass transportation.”
Mowasalat seeks to set high standards in public transport services by embracing innovation and technology, including alternative green fuel solutions. It also aims to provide varied transportation options for customers to choose from and enjoy, helping reduce congestion and pollution.
Dr Khalid al-Khanji, vice-president of student affairs at HBKU, said: “We are happy to support and collaborate with Mowasalat in their endeavour to deliver sustainable mobility solutions as it directly supports HBKU’s sustainability objectives.”
Ameena Hussain, director of the HBKU Student Centre, said: “I believe in partnering with local organisations in our efforts to offer opportunities for students to be engaged on campus and with the Qatari community.”
The programme will be a roundtable activity, giving students the opportunity to comprehend and evolve their ideas for sustainable future mobility.
