Fourteen Qatari nurses from Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC) are embarking on an innovative training programme called Leadership for Change.
Qatar is the sixth country in the region to implement the training programme, which was recently launched as a partnership between the World Health Organisation (WHO), the International Council of Nurses – Geneva, the Supreme Council of Health, HMC and the Primary Health Care Corporation.
The programme aims to develop the skills of nurses and support them with the knowledge they need to influence policy and health system improvements.
Hamad General Hospital’s Trauma Centre head nurse Asma Mosa is enrolled in the one year ‘Leadership for Change’ programme.
“It’s a great opportunity for self-development and is a driving force towards positive change in the country,” Mosa said adding: “It helps us to be better equipped with strategic planning and thinking skills, and to build strategic alliances within our organisations, amongst national public and private healthcare institutions, it also enables us to improve our skills by applying what we learn and implementing our projects inside the hospitals.”
“This is helping us develop our skills and improve the performance of our units which will have a positive impact on our delivery of patient care,” said.
Nurses in the programme work on project proposals and then implement the projects in their actual work environment.
Mosa is currently working with her group on looking at new and innovative ways to approach safety in the workplace.
“The wellbeing of  our patients is at the heart of everything we do and I’m glad that this programme has us thinking about the importance of staff safety in terms of ensuring we are providing the best services in a medical environment,” Mosa added.
