Qatar has made major strides in boosting human rights through the ratification of the United Nations Convention against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment, in addition to its accession to many regional and international conventions on human rights.
In a statement delivered at the 68th session of the General Assembly of the United Nations delivered before the Third Committee on the item 69, entitled “Promotion and protection of human rights”, Al-Anoud Qassim al-Tamimi, a member of Qatar’s delegation, said that the state’s concern over protection of human rights was represented in the celebration of the Human Rights Day which is observed on November 11 annually as one of the national events .
“The celebration reflects the great concern Qatar’s wise leadership accords to the promotion , protection and enrichment of human rights as an integral part of Qatar’s identity and culture,” she said.
Al-Anoud noted that the Qatar government had established a large number of human rights institutions at the Ministry of the Interior besides the Office of Human Rights at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Human Department at Ministry of Labour and the Supreme Council for Family Affairs. There were, she noted, also many non-governmental agencies like the National Human Rights Committee, Qatar Foundation for the Protection of Children and Women and Qatar Foundation for Combating Human Trafficking .
He referred, in this context, to Silatech “which aims to develop the economic situation of young people in the Arab region and Reach Out To Asia which aims to provide education for all in Asia”.
Al-Anoud said that Qatar intended to submit a draft resolution to the Third Committee about the UN Human Rights Training and Documentation Centre for South-West Asia.
