South Korean members of the International Ladies’ Potluck Group (ILPG) yesterday showcased their country’s rich art and culture during the group’s meeting at Al Jazi Gardens 4.
During ILPG meetings, members take turns to showcase their countries through a brief presentation, traditional show and display of handcrafts.
Argentina, Australia, Bahrain, Bolivia, Chile, Columbia, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Egypt, India, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, Mexico, Morocco, Pakistan, Palestine, Peru, the Philippines, Puerto Rico, Sri Lanka, Tunisia, Turkey, the US and Venezuela have hosted such events so far.
The main attraction of the event hosted by Choi Junghwa and Virginia Commonwealth University in Qatar (VCUQatar)’s alumna and fashion designer Elizabeth Y S was a fashion show put together by Y S, featuring some 25 vibrant-looking Hanbok – a traditional Korean attire meant for different seasons of the year.
It also showcased outfits worn by different social classes for diverse occasions, especially styles of the royal court, entertainers like Geeseng as well
as commoners.
According to Y S, the fashion show featured attires from private collections lent particularly for the event.
“Most of the models, about 30 of them, brought the attires and I tried to match the accessories and other paraphernalia,” she explained.
Other highlights of the meeting included screening of an introductory video about Korea, traditional Korean classic serenade Jeonga by Korean Culture Centre’s (Sarangplus) director An Jiwon, traditional Korean folk dance Ipchum by director of Traditional Korean Dance School in Seoul Oh Geunyoung, a raffle draw and a brunch.
Korea embassy deputy mission head Yoon Seong-mee was the chief guest at the event, which was also attended by ILPG co-presidents Ruth Sabry and Shriani Burley.
Served at the brunch were Korean dishes such as Bulgogi, Japchae, Galbijjim, Kimbap, Modum Jeon, Baechu kimchi, cucumber kimchi, steamed rice, fruit and rice cake - sponsored by Choi Junghwa, Hanna Ahn and Cheongkeewa Restaurant general manager Yong Kyun Na.
Arirang Bakery general manager Kim S Min sponsored the event by supplying many loaves of bread and cake.
