The Cadillac XTS at the launch event in Dubai’s Pavilion exhibition centre

Cadillac has launched the perfect complement to round off its range of sedans. A sensational new car called the XTS was added to the existing ATS and CTS sedans at an event in Dubai earlier this month.
The XTS is the full size sedan that was “missing from the range”.  More cars will follow at either end of the spectrum to fill what Cadillac feels is a shortage of choice in its sedan line-up.
Cadillac is already a huge player in the Middle East with its Escalade range of full size SUVs. These vehicles are the “gold standard” in the category and in line with the huge popularity of SUVs in the region, are available in a number of variants — which includes the extended wheelbase ESV and a pick-up version. All these vehicles already enjoy widespread visibility.
The XTS received a very warm welcome to the GCC and the Middle East at the very plush Pavilion exhibition centre in the shadow of the Burj Khalifa. A very appropriate setting, knowing the profile of the clientele.
The Cadillac XTS intends to be seen in extremely elite company so it is dressed to kill and equipped to stun with all the detail and technology that goes with the luxury turf.
The look is very typical of a Cadillac but the size has been rationalised to reflect the concerns of the time. The car has reduced its “external footprint without compromising on its interior space and comfort”.
The defining chrome Cadillac grille has changed and this latest one will be the new identity of the Cadillac range. Cadillac went to great lengths to expose journalists and clients at the launch event to the arresting and stylish centrepiece of its new luxury flagship which is the centre console or the Cadillac Cue infotainment system.
Cadillac has sought to de-clutter the whole entertainment experience inside the car by reducing the number of buttons and throwing in a 8-inch touch screen with a very tablet like feel.
The system can be used by pressing the buttons or swiping above the buttons which can be used to increase volume or manage the airconditioning.
There is also a home button that takes you back to home menu on the touchscreen where are all controls reside. You can swipe, tap, scroll and pinch the screen to zoom into the 3D GPS navigation. When you select an icon, the screen replies with a little pulse that tells you your selection is accepted. This enables the driver to stay focused on the road. Cadillac has introduced an “industry first natural voice recognition system that allows you to operate controls in a conversational tone” and does not require specific commands.
“Intuitive, intelligent and effortless Cue puts in command” is how Cadillac describes this new system.
The Cue faceplate hides a total surprise which one touch on the bottom edge causes the motorised front to lift and expose over one litre of hidden storage space ideal to store valuable items like a wallet or goggles. The faceplate also provides a little response pulse confirming the command when touched. Inside is also a lighted USB port. Touching the bottom edge again lowers the faceplate, to conceal your trinkets and gadgets.?The Cadillac User Experience or Cue allows you to access information and entertainment while keeping your hands on the wheel and eyes on the road. ?Cue controls can be managed in three ways: Using the touchscreen, a fiveway control stick on the wheel or natural voice recognition.
The driver’s seat is a snug leather wrapped spot with seats fully heated, and with a ventilated seat which is oriented towards the console. Driving the Cadillac XTS was a great introduction to luxury motoring as done in the USA. With extremely confident smooth handling and plenty of power to go.
The 50km drive from the Pavilion exhibition centre in the Emaar boulevard area down to the Meydan race track was extremely involving and even on crowded streets the driver is isolated from the elements.  Even with a superb console that does grab your attention it is difficult not to give yourself over to the driving experience and just enjoy the car. In the Middle East, the XTS is priced at 275,000 Saudi riyals and will come with a standard direct-injected 3.6 litre V-6 engine and is the only luxury sedan with Magnetic Ride Control – the world’s fastest-reacting suspension.
In addition, the XTS comes with a standard advanced all-wheel-drive system that uses Haldex technology to transfer power front-to-back, and side-to-side along the rear axle.
The XTS has 509 litres of boot space – room for five or more suitcases.
John Stadwick, president and managing director of General Motors Middle East said: “Cadillac continues to capture the attention and imagination of luxury vehicle buyers across the Middle East, which is being reflected in strong sales growth in 2012. And we are confident that the all-new XTS will attract a new generation of luxury customers to the brand.” ?Don Butler, vice-president of Cadillac marketing, added in his presentation: “The XTS brings new and exclusive technology, while still delivering the space and elegance that is Cadillac’s DNA.”?
Highlights include direct-injected 3.6L V-6 with lightweight features, including integrated cylinder heads/exhaust manifolds; advanced all-wheel-drive system with electronically controlled limited-slip differential; magnetic ride control, rear air suspension, HiPer Strut front suspension and Brembo brakes – all standard; Standard 20-inch wheels; capless fuel tank filler for easier, cleaner refueling;Folding rear-seat head restraints that enhance rear visibility; Safety Alert Seat that vibrates to alert the driver and Intervening braking system that lessens or avoids potential collisions.
