Qatar submitted the largest flag to the Guinness World Records authorities yesterday under the auspices of Katara - the Cultural Village Foundation - and Brooq Qatari Magazine.
Named the Fidelity & Loyalty Flag, the Qatar National Flag measures 509m in length, 200m in width and has a total size of 1,018sqm.
Crafted from high-quality canvas to the exact dimensions, the flag was presented to Talal Omar, Middle East director of the Guinness World Records (adjudicator), by Dr Khalid bin Ibrahim al-Sulaiti,  Katara general manager, and Moqim al-Hajiri, executive director of the Fidelity & Loyalty Flag campaign.
Addressing a press conference, Dr al-Sulaiti described the campaign as a national initiative expressing loyalty and belonging to Qatar, apart from love and gratitude to HH the Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani and HH the Father Emir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa al-Thani.
The Katara official expressed happiness at sponsoring this exceptional celebration, held to commemorate Qatar National Day, which is considered as a milestone and a major turning point in the country’s history. “The sponsoring of the Fidelity & Loyalty Flag campaign is part of realising the objectives of Katara’s new five-year strategy, essentially the consolidation of our national identity and revival of the Qatari patrimony,” Dr al-Sulaiti added.
Al-Hajiri said the objective of the campaign is not limited to creating a new Guinness World Record, but also to highlight the robust cohesion and brotherhood among the Qatari people and the country’s wise leadership, and demonstrate national and humanitarian values.
“It is also intended to deliver a message of loyalty to HH the Emir and HH the Father Emir for their meticulous efforts and dedication to this nation,” he said.
The Guinness official explained the specifications and international standards for the world’s largest flag and pointed out that the encyclopaedia will adopt the flag after verification of the specifications and standards.
