Qatar has called for strengthening nuclear security and safety in the region, especially in power reactors.
Dr Ahmad Hassan al-Hammadi, director of the Legal Affairs Department at the Foreign Ministry, also urged countries to join the international nuclear safety instruments in order to maintain the safety and security of nuclear facilities from any leak that could have dangerous consequences in the region as a whole.
Addressing the 57th general conference on Nuclear Safety held here yesterday, al-Hammadi urged countries of the region to enhance the role of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) , saying nuclear disarmament, nuclear non-proliferation and peaceful uses of atomic energy are the three pillars of  the organisation and that the objective of nuclear disarmament is the ultimate goal of humanity.
Al Hammadi renewed Qatar’s commitment to support the IAEA in facilitating the peaceful applications of atomic energy to serve humanity.
He said Qatar was working to prepare cadres as well as creating a legal environment for administering and organising the usage of the nuclear technology in the areas of energy, health, industry, agriculture, water management and other peaceful applications.
He said the state is witnessing an era of stability, development and prosperity and aspiring for a peaceful and sustainable world.
The official called on the international community to work hard to achieve the objective of creating a nuclear weapons-free zones in the Middle East and other weapons of mass destruction.
He stressed Qatar will submit its nomination for the membership IAEA Board of Governors in the election that will take place during this session, indicating that the nomination was supported by the  geographic group of which Qatar is a member.
