Under the patronage of HE Sheikha al-Mayassa bint Hamad bin Khalifa al-Thani, chairperson of Qatar Museums Authority (QMA), Red Bull Flugtag will visit Doha on November 1. The event will be held at the Museum of Islamic Art Park.
Red Bull Flugtag, which has toured 40 cities around the world for more than 20 years, will be held in collaboration with Ford as one of the main sponsors, Innovations Unlimited ME - the event management agency, QMA and MIA as the hosts and Qatar TV as the official media partner.
In the 19th century, Arab inventor Abbas Ibn Firnas designed a flying machine consisting of a structure and large wings and tried to fly. He succeeded for a short distance. Today, the Arab world is witnessing new flying trials at the Red Bull Flugtag, with 45 teams working hard on designing unique and varied flying machines.
The first Red Bull Flugtag was held in Vienna, Austria, in 1992 and the word Flugtag means “flying day” in German. Since its success in Vienna, the event has been held more than 100 times. Amazing achievements have been registered based on three major factors: creativity of the craft, showmanship and flight distance, in unique and fun experiences.
Some of the cities that have hosted Flugtag are New York, San Francisco, Chicago, Los Angeles, Miami, Cleveland and Philadelphia (US), Marseille (France), Prague (Czech Republic), Mainz (Germany), Belgrade (Serbia), Kiev (Ukraine), Istanbul (Turkey), Vancouver (Canada), Sydney (Australia) and Auckland and Wellington (New Zealand). In the Arab countries, Red Bull Flugtag has been held in Kuwait in 2007, 2010 and 2012; in the United Arab Emirates (Dubai) in 2005 and 2007 and in Jeddah (Saudi Arabia) in 2012. This is the first time that the event will be held in Doha.
A German team holds the current world record for the longest flying distance with a 69.79m flight, breaking the previous two-year record of 63m in front of more than 60,000 people gathered at the Red Bull Flugtag in Mainz last year. The city holding the record for the largest crowd is Cape Town, South Africa, with more than 220,000 people in 2012.
“The 1st Red Bull Flugtag Qatar is marking the grand finale for 2013 and we are very excited to stage this event,” said Markus Jordan, managing partner of Innovations Unlimited ME. “Action-filled entertainment will ensure that the day will be as much fun for the spectators as it will be for the contestants.”
