A Filipino-led ‘Yellow Team’ won the finals of the two-day 1st Asics  Cup Championship 2013 held at the Aspire Zone Tennis Community recently.
The team led by Jess Garcia overpowered both the Black and White teams to win the championship. Each team has 13 players who competed in singles, doubles and mixed doubles. Individual awards were also given to some players for their exceptional talent.
Asics team captain Ed Palad, also the head of the White team, said: “The future of tennis looks very bright here in Aspire.”
Meanwhile, Greg Lucero’s Black team worked hard but failed to stop the intensity of the Yellow team who played well even during the first day of the tournament.
Yussoff Lomondot won the best singles; Father and son tandem Arnel and Maurence Almazan bagged the doubles event; and John Alcance with Cherie Brigoli ruled the mixed doubles. A special award was given to Albert Alfonzo for gathering the majority vote to earn the most promising and co-operative tennis player. Two children joined this tournament: Samuel dela Cruz and Hakeem Lomondot.
AZTC organiser and tournament director Nhoy Maranan said that tennis had become popular in Qatar with the strengthening of the existing programmes of Asics Team family. It also started the children’s training.
