Derek Jeter made a successful return from the disabled list and Alfonso Soriano had the game-winning single with one out in the ninth, lifting the New York Yankees to a 6-5 victory over the Tampa Bay Rays at Yankee Stadium on Sunday.

Jeter homered on the first pitch he saw from Tampa Bay starter Matt Moore with one out in the first and singled in his second at-bat.

He also had two groundouts to shortstop in which he was more controlled in his run to first base than usual in an effort to protect the right quadriceps that had sidelined him since July 11.

Soriano had his first four hits since being re-acquired by the Yankees Friday, and Ichiro Suzuki had four singles.

Elsewhere, Yasiel Puig hit a walk-off home run in the bottom of the eleventh inning as the Dodgers prevailed despite striking out a Los Angeles club-record 20 times.

Cincinnati starter Tony Cingrani limited the Dodgers to one hit over seven innings while striking out 11, but Puig broke through with one swing of the bat and Los Angeles grabbed a 2 ½ game lead in the National League West.

The Braves strung together four consecutive two-out hits in the sixth inning to break a tie and complete a weekend sweep of the Cardinals.

The Cardinals scored just three runs in the three games and saw their lead in the National League Central over the second-place Pirates slip to 1 ½ games with a five-game series in Pittsburgh starting on Monday night.

Chris Johnson had three hits, including a double, for the first-place Braves to take over the lead in the National League batting race with a .338 average.

For the third straight game, the A’s came from behind to beat the Angels.

The Angels took an early 5-0 lead, gave it all back, then went back ahead 6-5 with a run in the sixth before the A’s countered with five runs in the bottom of the frame and extended their lead in the American League West to a season-high six games.
