The Consumer Protection Department (CPD) has seized about 15,000 counterfeited building materials from two warehouses in the Industrial Area.

The seizure followed an inspection campaign carried out by the officers of the Commercial Fraud Combat Section at the CPD on finding  that two companies were selling counterfeit building materials of  a well-known Italian company .

In a statement, a CPD spokesman said that  fake goods “pose serious hazards on the overall health and safety of the public”.

The seized materials will be kept by the department until penalty is decided by the judicial authorities.

Qatar’s  regulations stipulate that a supplier displaying any consumer article must show clearly on its package or cover the type of the item, its nature and its components. If the use of the item entails any risks, the supplier is to indicate this clearly. Any deception or misleading
information is a violation of the law.

CPD director Sheikh Jassim bin Jabor bin Hassan al-Thani said the Ministry of Business and Trade would be strict in enforcing the law and its regulations.

He also pointed out that consumers should insist on original and quality products, especially when it came to building materials and electric appliances as the counterfeit items posed serious risks. He affirmed that CPD would intensify its inspections to combat fraud.
