Widam Food Company has sold around 9,577 subsidised sheep during the first week of Ramadan, representing 28% of the overall targeted of subsidised animals estimated at 34,000 heads.
The sales included 6,860 heads of Syrian sheep and 2,717 Jordanian goats. There was also a good turn out on all the company’s slaughterhouses including the public slaughterhouses 1 and 2 at the Central Market (85% of the customers), Al-Khor slaughterhouse 8% and Al-Shammal 7%.
Musa Ahmed, head of the Public Relations Department at Widam, said that turnout of customers on buying subsidised sheep has been very high and the process would continue until the end of the month of Ramadan.
He affirmed that each citizen could get only two subsidised sheep registering with Qatari ID and the sheep should be slaughtered immediately at Widam slaughterhouses to avoid any resale of the animals.
He pointed out that the Syrian sheep sells at QR950, the Jordanian for QR850 and the Australian for QR350.
He affirmed that the company has prepared two big waiting tents, one for men and the other for women in addition to increasing the number of butchers to speed up the process.

‘Qatar free from Mers virus’

Qatar is free from the Sars-like Mers (Middle East Respiratory Syndrome) coronavirus and 400 people have tested negative for the disease, a high-ranking Qatari official has confirmed.
Dr Mohamed al-Hajri, Director of Health Protection and Communicable Diseases Control at the Supreme Council of Health (SCH), has said: “The situation is under control.”
Responding to a question, the official said there was no scientific basis to the talk that the virus was being caused by dates. “It’s a baseless talk.”
To rule out the possibility that some animals here may be affected by the virus, the authorities are conducting extensive tests so that if there is a problem it could be tackled at its source, he said noting that the tests are being conducted by the Supreme Council of Health (SCH) in co-ordination with the WHO and the Ministry of Environment.
Qatar, according to al-Hajri, is closely co-ordinating with the Saudi authorities as people from here are going there for Umrah (pilgrimage). “We are getting updated information on the disease from the Saudi authorities,” he noted.
Some Mers cases have been reported from the nearby Saudi city of Al Ahsa but the Saudi government is taking preventive measures. Hundreds of thousands of people are in Makkah for Umrah and not a single Mers case has been reported, said the official. He said dangerous viruses like Sars in 2003 and now coronavirus are a result of climate change and the greenhouse effect.
There is no need to panic because more than 8,000 people were affected by Sars but only a small percentage succumbed to it.
