HSBC is providing all personal Internet banking customers with a new device that will add an extra layer of security while accessing their accounts online.
The device, which is small enough to keep in a wallet or purse, generates a unique PIN code each time a customer logs on to his/her account. Called the HSBC Secure Key, it is unique because it doesn’t require a bank card to be inserted into the reader. This new device represents HSBC’s latest initiative to ensure that its customers remain one step ahead of online fraudsters.
Kris Werner, head of Retail Banking and Wealth Management in Qatar, said: “In 2012, direct costs associated with global consumer cyber crime touched $110bn, according to Norton. As Qatar becomes more and more financially attractive, banks must do all they can to safeguard customers against the risk of growing cyber crimes.”
Consumers, too, have a key part to play in keeping themselves safe online, explains Werner. “Customers are the first line of defence against online crime and can do a lot to ensure that their accounts are safe from cyber criminals. Keeping one’s PIN and passwords secret is vital and this is why we have added the HSBC Secure Key to our range of customer-focused online protection,” he said.
“By generating a unique code every time you access your account, you can be confident that you are the only person accessing your money. Our Secure Key is small and lightweight enough to keep in your wallet or purse; so, you can still do your banking wherever and whenever you like. It’s a quick extra step to keep our customers’ details secure and away from uninvited eyes.”
Customers can order a Secure Key through the HSBC website online or by calling 44411550. For further information, visit www.hsbc.com.qa
