Worldwide membership of the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) has reached 162,000, with 10,361 new members joining it in 2012/13.

ACCA has also said business leaders and employers of professional accountants have endorsed it as a global leader in its sector, following a survey that covered some 35 countries.

The ACCA qualification continues to be highly attractive to aspiring professionals around the world, with ACCA recruiting 61,311 new students to the professional qualification, an increase over last year.

Commenting on the ACCA milestone, Qatar Foundation chief financial officer Faisal R al-Hajri said: “With so many developmental projects in Qatar, the need of the hour is to consider professional qualifications for all aspects within the finance and accountancy streams, for the human capital of this country. The world is keenly observing developments in the Middle East, especially in Qatar, which stands out as a prime example of how an emerging nation can migrate from being a hydrocarbon-based to a knowledge-based economy.

“Education, therefore, is the key driver of change. Employers need their finance and accountancy staff to be equipped with optimal technical knowledge and deliver effective and practical application of the knowledge. This, of course, has to be backed with the highest standards of integrity, which lies at the heart of the finance and accountancy profession. This is an opportune time to develop local talent as qualifications such as ACCA provide robust and dynamic career opportunities.”

Founded in 1904, ACCA is the global body for professional accountants. It offers business-relevant, first-choice qualifications to people of “application, ability and ambition” around the world who seek a rewarding career in accountancy, finance and management.
