In an effort to enhance traffic safety awareness among the general public, the Traffic Department  has proposed forming committees comprising members of each community in the country.

This was announced by Lieut Riyas Ahmed al- Saleh  during a community interaction meeting held at the Traffic Department headquarters yesterday.

Al- Saleh said: “All expatriate members have to co-operate with the Traffic Department to ensure traffic safety for everyone in the country. I believe that community members will  take up the message of traffic safety in the true sense and will respond positively to the efforts of the traffic department.”

Al-Saleh said that the department would form a committee for each community and the panel’s team  members would be trained  on traffic safety. The committee members will then carry out an awareness campaign among community members.

He appealed to community leaders to select people with good communication skills to become members of the committe  so they could effectively convey the message to people.

The official also said that the Traffic Department would organise a short film competition on various topics of traffic safety. He said: “The specific topics will be given to the general public later and  prizes will be awarded to winners.”

Similarly, the Traffic Department will conduct a study on pedestrian deaths.

Al- Saleh said: “The study will focus on the reasons for pedestrian deaths and will explore ways to prevent these casualties. I request community members to cooperate and prepare suggestions.”

Around 500 leaders of expatriate communities as well as representatives  of a number of  schools were present.
