Prominent Qatari entrepreneur Jassim Mohamed Sulaiman died at a local hospital after a brief illness in the early hours yesterday. He was 70.

He was buried in Abu Hamour in the presence of a gathering consisting of many senior community members in the afternoon.

Mohamed Sulaiman was the vice-chairman and managing director of Video Home & Electronic Centre, and Jumbo Electronics, the country distributors of many prominent home appliances brands, including LG Electronics.

He leaves behind his wife, son Sajjid Jassim Mohamed Sulaiman and four daughters. Sajjid Jassim is the executive director of the group.

Mohamed Sulaiman founded Video Home & Electronics more than 30 years ago after serving for more than a decade in the Cable & Wireless, the initial telecom providers in Qatar. His group has about 15 showrooms across Qatar, besides holding stakes in many other businesses.

Sources told this newspaper that even though Mohamed Sulaiman was not in good health for quite some time, he received some of his business partners at his office on the Airport road on June 29. Later in the day he complained of uneasiness and was admitted to hospital.

Management and staff at Video Home & Electronic Centre, Jumbo Electronics and other companies of the group formally mourned Mohamed Sulaiman’s death yesterday.

The group’s director and general manager C V Rappai described Sulaiman as an “extremely hardworking businessman and one of the main pillars of the group that he represented”.
