A South African embassy official is expected to join members of the Filipino community today for the weekly fun run and “Qataerobics” on the Corniche.
Culture attaché Richard Billedo told Gulf Times that they were also expecting the Kenyan ambassador to participate in what was seen as a healthy endeavour for expatriate workers. “We are glad that this project has attracted hundreds of overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) as well as those from other nations, such as South Africa. Everyone is welcome to join us here,” he said.
Despite the rising temperature, Philippine embassy officials and Filipino community leaders have decided to continue the free fitness initiative every Friday at 6am due to the increasing number of participants. It is preceded by a fun run at 5.30am.
Billedo has expressed optimism that many communities and groups in Doha will join the two activities, which serve as alternative exercises for people
of all ages.
More than 200 individuals from different Filipino organisations led the launch of “Qataerobics” in April. Some Qatari athletes and sports enthusiasts also joined the event.
It was the idea of Billedo and Ambassador Crescente Relacion to have a group exercise other than playing basketball, walking and running. They had noticed that many OFWs were looking for a unique and wholesome physical activity.
The labour attaché said the authorities in Qatar allowed the event to be staged, with the participants required to wear proper attire - something that would not offend the local culture and norms.
Filipinos have been urged to take advantage of the fitness initiative, which gives them the opportunity to lead a healthy lifestyle. These activities will also complement existing fitness facilities along the Corniche, set up by the Qatar Olympic Committee.
Billedo said those who want to join the fun run should come as early as 5.30am. Then, the “Qataerobics” will start at 6am led by instructors from Fitness First.
The Philippine embassy is also planning to organise sports activities such as table tennis, badminton and other indoor games.
