Dr Paul Lanier Ogburn Jr, a renowned expert in obstetrics and gynaecology, has joined Sidra Medical and Research Centre (SMRC) as its inaugural clinical chief, obstetrics and gynaecology.

This is a vital appointment for the hospital, research and education institution in Doha, which will specialise in women and children care. Dr Ogburn will also take up the position of Chair of Obstetrics at Weill Cornell Medical College in Qatar (WCMC-Q), Sidra’s partner for medical education and research.

Commenting on the latest appointment to Sidra’s senior team, chief medical officer Edward S Ogata said: “In Dr Ogburn, we have found an exceptional physician, teacher, researcher and thought leader to assure that obstetrics and gynaecology at Sidra will be outstanding. In addition to the 30 years of experience at top US institutions, he brings with him passion and commitment to make Sidra a true hub for care, learning and innovation in women’s health.”

Besides leading the clinical and educational aspects of Sidra’s obstetrics and gynaecology division, Dr Ogburn will collaborate with Sidra’s chief research officer, Francesco M Marincola, to deliver research programmes.

In collaboration with Hamad Medical Corporation and WCMC-Q, research at Sidra will focus on medical conditions, epidemiology and issues that primarily afflict the women and children of the Arab world, including diabetes, cancer and maternal-foetal health.

“The opportunity to join both Sidra and WCMC-Q is unique and the focus that the organisations are placing on advancing foetal and maternal health is truly inspiring,” said Dr Ogburn. “I believe we have a rare opportunity to transform the care of women in Qatar and the region and make clinical and medical advances that will benefit mothers and babies around the world.”
