Thirty eight students of grade 11, including 34 Qataris, from independent and international schools from Qatar participated in the Future Aggie Engineers Programme organised by Texas A&M University at Qatar ( TAMUQ) in the Education City recently.
The University’s Office of Student Recruitment and Outreach designed the programme to familiarise prospective students with different engineering disciplines offered by TAMUQ.
Nashwa Fahmy, programme manager at the office of Student Recruitment and Outreach, said that it was designed to attract students to engineering programmes. “Our aim as a university is to inspire these students and encourage them to consider engineering as a field of study. We gave them an insight about the academic opportunities offered at TAMUQ,” he added.
The programme was supported and sponsored by ExxonMobil and Q-Chem. Robin Ullrich, training and development superintendent at Q-Chem said: “Q-Chem supports the TAMUQ Future Aggie Engineers Programme for young nationals to expose them to the field of engineering. We see this event as a major stepping stone to opening the minds of potential engineers and help them prepare them for a career in engineering.”
Bart Cahir, president and general manager of ExxonMobil Qatar Inc., said: “As Qatar’s energy industry continues to grow along with an increased demand for complex infrastructure, young and capable engineers are going to be vital to the country’s continued success. Programmes such as this are so important because they help Qatar’s high performing youth better understand the vast career opportunities available to them in various engineering fields, as well as the enormous positive impact they can have on their country’s future.”
Dr. Hamid Parsaei, associate dean for academic affairs at TAMUQ said the programme was vital to the university’s recruitment efforts. “This programme helps promote engineering as a field of study by inspiring prospective students to contribute Qatar’s fast growing economy and the Qatar National Vision 2030,” he said.
