The 500,000th Porsche vehicle has rolled off the production line in the German luxury carmaker’s plant in Leipzig, Saxony, Porsche Centre Doha announced.
The anniversary sports car, a Cayenne with a V8 engine, was converted into a command vehicle for the Leipzig fire brigade with the assistance of Porsche’s apprentices.
The Cayenne is Porsche Centre Doha’s top seller in Qatar for several years now.
Matthias Müller, president and chief executive of Porsche AG, handed over the car keys to the Lord Mayor of the City as a token of the affiliation with Porsche’s Leipzig home.
“Half a million vehicles in only 10 years is a remarkable result,” Muller said while attributing the success to a workforce now numbering 1,005 in Saxony.
Porsche Leipzig executive board chairman Siegfried Bulow revealed that the company was expanding its production for an entirely new model line as well.
Production of the new SUV Macan is expected to start by the end of 2013. To that end, Porsche is developing the production facility into a fully-fledged plant with its own body assembly line and paint shop, investing more than 500mn euro and creating approximately 1,000 additional jobs in the medium term.
