HE the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of State for Cabinet Affairs Ahmad bin Abdullah al-Mahmoud yesterday met Dr Ameen Hassan Omar, the State Minister at the Sudanese Presidency and head of Darfur Peace Follow-Up Office; and professor Ibrahim Gambari, the head of the joint United Nations-African Union peacekeeping mission in Darfur (UNAMID) and joint chief mediator, who are currently visiting Doha.
During the meeting, they reviewed the next stage in the Darfur peace process in light of the steps taken to implement the Doha Document.
They welcomed the agreement between the Sudanese government and the Liberation and Justice Movement (LJM), in the presence of the UNAMID, to amend the schedule for the implementation stipulated in the Doha Document for peace in Darfur, which will be signed this week.
They also took note that the amendment for including the Doha Document for peace in Darfur in the Sudanese constitution.
Talks during the meeting also addressed the consultations between the joint mediation, chaired by Qatar, and other movements that have not joined the peace process in Doha, in order to urge them take part in the process.
The coming period will witness further contacts with these movements, especially since some of them have shown a clear response with the joint mediation’s efforts for peace on the basis of the Doha Document. It is expected that meetings will be held after the holy month of Ramadan.
The discussions during the meeting also covered the ongoing preparations to hold the Doha International Conference for Darfur Reconstruction and Development.
