Qatar General Electricity and Water Corporation (Kahramaa) marked World Environment Day (WED) at Al Arabi Sports Club in collaboration with Kainat Foundation.
A large number of school students, parents, scouts’ teams, senior functionaries of participating organisations and dignitaries were present on the occasion, including a Kahramaa delegation led by Abdulla Majid al-Khulaifi, head of conservation technology in the conservation and energy efficiency
department.
Kahramaa’s participation in the event highlighted the importance of the protection and sustainable use of natural resources, with the aim of creating a safe, secure world for future generations. The participation was also part of Kahramaa’s efforts towards the national campaign for the conservation and efficient use of water and energy
(Tarsheed).
The theme for this year’s WED was “Think.Eat.Save”, a global anti-food waste and food loss campaign that encourages the reduction of “foodprint”. The campaign is aimed at encouraging people to become more aware of the environmental impact of their food choices and empower them to make informed food decisions.
The participating schools gave presentations on related topics. A presentation by Kahramaa was also screened on the ongoing Tarsheed.
An exhibition featuring students’ creations pertaining to the environment and eco-issues was a major attraction at the event. Prizes and certificates were distributed among the participating schools and students. The organisers were also felicitated.
Al-Khulaifi said: “The demand for water, which is supplied at a subsidised rate across Qatar, is rising. A number of recent studies on water consumption have found that Qatar’s per capita water consumption is the highest in world. As a result, the conservation of electricity and water was the need of the hour.”
