HH the Deputy Emir and Heir Apparent Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani yesterday received a written message from Eritrean President Isaias Afwerki dealing with bilateral relations and issues of mutual concern.
Eritrean Ambassador to Qatar Ali Ibrahim Ahmed handed over the message during a meeting with the Deputy Emir and Heir Apparent at the Emiri Diwan.

ties discussed


Masoud bin Mohamed al-Amri, the president of the Cassation Court and Chairman of the Supreme Judicial Council (SJC) met the South African Ambassador to Qatar Saad Cachalia yesterday.
Talks during the meeting dealt with facets of co-operation and co-ordination in the legal and judicial fields between the two judicial authorities of the two countries and means of enhancing them.

Karwa taxi
catches fire


A Karwa taxi caught fire in the afternoon yesterday after the driver brought the vehicle to a halt when he reportedly noticed that its engine was overheating. However, no one was injured.
The driver was said to be alone in the vehicle.
Soon after he stopped the vehicle alongside the road near Burzan Tower, and got out, the vehicle burst into flames, sources said.  
The incident happened when there was a lot of traffic movement in the area, they said.

Donations for US
tornado victims


The American Chamber of Commerce in Qatar (AmCham Qatar) will be collecting donations today and tomorrow (Friday and Saturday) for the victims of the devastating tornado that hit Oklahoma this week.
Donations can be dropped off at the Doha Rugby Club (next to Doha College) between 3pm and 5pm, an official said while explaining that new or used clothing, pillows, blankets and bedding are greatly appreciated.
“If possible, please bring donations in a box for shipping. Any donation, big or small, will make a difference,” the official added.

Grand finale of

Expatriate’s body to
be flown home tonight


The body of Indian expatriate Sam P George (49), who died on Monday, will be flown home tonight, sources said.
George, a native of Othara in Pathanamthitta district in Kerala, was in Doha for about 20 years, they said.
He was working in a private firm. He died of a heart attack at Hamad General Hospital.
George leaves behind his wife Asha Sam (Qatar Computer Services), and children Geo Sam (BTech student, Velloore Institute of Technology, Tamil Nadu) and Thomas P Sam (Class 12 student at DPS-MIS).
Funeral prayers will be held at Hamad morgue at 2.30pm. The burial is on Monday.

Photography contest


Aiesec in Qatar, a branch of the world’s largest youth led organisation and part of the Qatari Businessmen Association, under the patronage of Sheikh Faisal bin Qassim al-Thani, has announced the signing of a memorandum of understanding with the Ministry of Culture, Arts and Heritage.
The initiative combines an Instagram photography competition with a photography workshop for skills development. In parallel, international students were flown to Qatar to work with local students on shooting a film displaying what brings Doha alive from the youth perspective.
The film will be edited under the assistance of Ginger Camel, an entrepreneurial Video production company. The winners of the Instagram Competition will be feted and the film screened at the Doha Alive Ceremony on May 31.
