IAID teams up with FEC to host Eco-Fashion Design Contest

International Academy for Intercultural Development (IAID) and Friends of the Environment Centre (FEC)  are organising an Eco-Fashion Design Contest on May 17.

The event will be held as part of the World Environment Day 2013 celebrations in Qatar.

The contest, which is open to fashion enthusiasts aged eight years and above, aims for the wider involvement of the community.

World Environment Day will be celebrated in Qatar for the seventh consecutive year, with the events taking place between May 17 and June 5.

“The Eco-Fashion Design Contest generally aims to educate everyone, especially the younger crowd, on the importance of recycling while giving them an outlet for their creativity,” said Dr Saif Ali al-Hajari, chairman of FEC.

Each team will include a maximum of three designers and be allowed to present one eco-fashion outfit design. Contestants will be allowed to use only recyclable materials and can include cardboard, tin, recycled fabric or clothing, aluminium, plastic, paper cartons, chipboard, newspaper, mixed papers (magazines, junk mail and catalogues), paper bags, glass etc.

All entries will be presented on May 17 (4pm) on the IAID premises.

The winning designs will be selected in co-ordination with Virginia Commonwealth University in Qatar (fashion department).

Designs will be judged based on the overall look, environmental message, creativity and team effort.

The shortlisted entries will be showcased on the ramp, with the final selection of winners taking place during the closing and awards ceremony.

 

 

Italy’s commercial mission to open bureau in Qatar

Italy’s commercial mission will open a bureau in Qatar in collaboration with the Italian embassy in Doha by the end of 2013, the mission’s attache in Dubai Fernando Fiore said, citing growing significance of the Qatari market for his country and its firms.

Fiore told a press conference at the Italian embassy in Doha that the Dubai bureau used to serve the UAE, Qatar and Oman, but added that due to growing interest of Italian businesses, the bureau decided to establish an office in Doha to facilitate commercial ties between Italian and Qatari firms and work to attract Italian investments to Doha.

Italian Ambassador to Qatar Guido De Sanctis said Italian exports to Doha were up to $1.025bn in 2011, adding that they grew by 54% in 2012.

 

Doha Municipality opens new fish-cleaning hall

The Municipality of Doha has opened a new fish cleaning hall at the central fish market, local Arabic daily Al Watan reported.

There are more than 30 workers. A mechanism has been set in place for the organisation of consumer entry, delivery, weighing as well as the distribution of fish to the cleaners.

Head of the General Monitoring at the Doha Municipality Ali al-Hajiri has stated that a ticketing device will be soon installed to organise operations and clientele traffic.

The cleaning hours in the new hall has been changed. Morning shifts are from 5am until 2pm while evening shifts start at 6pm and end at 10pm.

The new hall includes many services and utilities which eliminate the problems of the old facility. The cleaning charges will remain the same.
