Maersk Oil Qatar (MOQ) recently celebrated their safety achievements as part of Maersk Oil’s Global Safety Day.
Onshore and offshore, on drilling rigs and on production platforms, in offices and warehouses, staff, contractors and family members gathered to discuss how Maersk Oil has turned its ‘incident-free’ mind-set into results.
“We operate facilities which, by their very nature, are intrinsically dangerous, but by having a rigorous focus on safety, we believe that it is possible to prevent accidents,” said Lewis Affleck, Maersk Oil Qatar’s managing director.
Maersk Oil introduced ‘incident-free’ globally in 2011, seeking to transform the company’s safety culture and performance in two ways.
“We are very proud that we recorded our best ever safety statistics in 2012, results that are considered top quartile in our industry,” Affleck stated.
Working in close partnership with Qatar Petroleum, Maersk Oil produces around one-third of Qatar’s daily oil production from the Al Shaheen field, offshore Qatar. In doing so, MOQ operates nine platform locations, at which there are 32 ‘jackets’ – each one home to a combination of production, accommodation and flare-related facilities.
The company also has two of the world’s largest double-hulled floating storage and offloading vessels, which transfer oil to tankers for export to markets around the world. These operations are supported by an array of offshore and onshore people and facilities.
“We’ve seen some great safety achievements at many of our facilities” Affleck pointed out. “For example, up to 10 years without a ‘lost time incident’ (LTI) on some platform locations, four years without an LTI at our warehouse, and more than five years without an LTI at our Doha office.”
Maersk Oil’s 2013 Safety Day also included a ‘Safety Fair’, which provided family members an opportunity to learn more about safety at home and on the roads.
