Dr al-Maslamani receives his recognition certificate from two members of the Custodian Group.

Some 70 international transplant leaders and some members of the World Health Organisation (WHO) acknowledged the Doha Donation Accord (DDA) as a new model to supporting organ donation and transplantation.

The leaders convened in Doha last month to celebrate the DDA as well as the completion of five years of the Declaration of Istanbul Custodian Group. The Declaration of Istanbul Custodian Group was formed in Istanbul in 2008 and represents 150 of the world’s leading experts in organ transplantation.

The group discusses problems of organ trafficking and commercialism in organ donation and is committed to achieving a state of self-sufficiency for countries involved in organ donation and transplantation.

The DDA is a result of HH Sheikha Moza bint Nasser’s vision of ‘Health for All’, which was established to help achieve a status of self-sufficiency and equality in organ allocation and patient care in Qatar.

Since its establishment, the accord has recorded an increase in pledges for organ donation and transplants while maintaining the highest ethical standards and patient care.

At the event, the world leaders appraised the commitments and standards of organ donation and transplantation services in Doha and applauded Qatar’s efforts and leadership of Hamad Medical Corporation to ethical principles and implementation of the Declaration of Istanbul.

Qatar Organ Donation Centre director Dr Riadh Fadhil said: “We are honoured to know that the Doha model for organ transplant and donation has been considered a good example of implementation of the Istanbul principles. We are committed to this cause and getting recognition from such world renowned leaders is a strong testimony of our achievements.”

The official mentioned plans to start research and academic collaborations with the WHO, Unesco and many other distinguished institutes to build a strong foundation of organ donation and transplantation in Doha.

The Custodian Group also gave individual recognition awards to HMC staff members including Hamad General Hospital medical director Dr Yousef al-Maslamani, Surgery Department chair Dr Abdulla al-Ansari and Dr Fadhil for their role in developing and implementing the DDA.
