An art installation being set up. |
An impressive exhibition of large-scale paintings, sculpture, photographic essays and video installations will be open to the public at Doha College tomorrow between 5pm and 7pm.
“The annual event is the culmination of two years of study in the visual arts and a vibrant celebration of seeing and understanding,” said Peter Corr, head of Art & Photography.
Many of the students have commented thoughtfully on the creative journey they have taken, with the twists and turns, setbacks and breakthroughs that form the progression towards a final piece.
“We think the metaphor of a journey is very useful in highlighting and explaining what we are trying to achieve,” Corr explained.
The actual process of making images, experimenting with materials, taking risks, trying out alternatives and refining technique is at the centre of what the students do.
“There is no definitive right or wrong answer in art, but that doesn’t mean, as many post-modern art critics might argue, that all solutions and outcomes are relative and equal in merit,” Corr observed.
In the absence of a single correct answer, what the students are learning is the ability to make reasoned judgments and informed personal decisions.
“We ask them to make subtle and appropriate distinctions between visual relationships, balancing line, tone, texture, shape and perspective in creative and inventive ways.
“We also ask them to relate and connect their own work to that of professional artists and designers so that meaning and purpose has to be considered alongside technical considerations. “The students are encouraged to think for themselves and to recognise that art is a language with its own vocabulary and syntax and a powerful means of personal expression.
