The collapse of a suspension bridge yesterday in central Thailand killed at least five people and injured 15, news reports said.

The collapse was believed to have been caused when the main cables that supported the bridge deck snapped, the Bangkok Post reported.

The dead were crushed under a pillar on one side of the bridge over the Pa Sak River in Ayutthaya province, 90 kilometres north of Bangkok, The Nation newspaper said.

The collapse also sent a large number of pedestrians and motorcyclists into the water.

The bridge, built in 1982, had recently been repaired. It was four metres wide and 120 metres long.
