The collapse of a suspension bridge yesterday in central Thailand killed at least five people and injured 15, news reports said. |
The collapse was believed to have been caused when the main cables that supported the bridge deck snapped, the Bangkok Post reported.
The dead were crushed under a pillar on one side of the bridge over the Pa Sak River in Ayutthaya province, 90 kilometres north of Bangkok, The Nation newspaper said.
The collapse also sent a large number of pedestrians and motorcyclists into the water.
The bridge, built in 1982, had recently been repaired. It was four metres wide and 120 metres long.
