Children taking part in the painting contest
A large number of art enthusiasts have taken part in the World Environment Day (WED) Painting Contest recently organised by IAID, the academy for dance, music and arts, in association with the Friends of the Environment Centre (FEC).
IAID and FEC have been the major organisers of WED celebrations in Qatar for the six consecutive year under the auspices of FEC chairman Dr Saif Ali al-Hajari.
The theme of the WED celebrated all over the world, initiated by the UN Environment Programme, this year was ‘Green Economy – does it include you?’
The organisers welcomed some 2,000 eager and excited participants at IAID premises, where they created art based on this year’s painting contest theme ‘Save the Environment’.
The two-day event allotted two hours per session that accommodated participants from different age categories including A (4-6 years), B (7-9), C (10-12), D (13-15), E (16-18), and F (above 18).
IAID director Rajesh Jadhav said this year’s competition was an overwhelming success as they received the biggest number of entries since WED painting contest started.
WED 2012 Project manager Marianne Indrinal said that as expected, the finished artworks were amazing and she foresees the panel of judges from Virginia Commonwealth University in Qatar may have a tough time picking up the winning entries at the judging today.
She said that the event would not have been possible without the support of all the participating schools, the participants and their families, sponsors and partners and the public in general who have given their time and effort to the special initiative.
All prize-winners in the contest will be notified through phone or email and will be posted at iloveqatar.net/wed2012.
More than 90 winners will be recognised at the WED 2012 closing and prize awarding ceremony to be held on June 5 at Al Rayyan Theatre, Souq Waqif. Gifts, cash prizes, trophies and certificates await the winners.
A special exhibition of all prize winning painting entries will also be held on the same day.
