Exotic spices, herbs, condiments and nuts of a staggering variety are a familiar sight at the spice market. A number of shops selling musical instruments, souvenirs, toys, trinkets, carpets are patronised by the tourists while outlets selling traditional Arab outfits and tailors catering exclusively to thobes and abayas are a big hit with the locals. Many of the shopowners are running their businesses at the same location for decades.
A favourite haunt for the children is the pets section on the side of the souq facing the Corniche. Not just the youngsters, families accompanying their children, animal lovers and visitors linger on to see the animals, birds and colourful fish on display. Prices could range from a few riyals for a small fish and to thousands of riyals, when it comes to exotic birds, pedigree puppies and cats.
These outlets also stock pet food and accessories. Prices are not fixed and would largely depend on the knowledge and bargaining skills of the buyer.
