Dr Chris Triggle, professor of pharmacology at Weill Cornell Medical College in Qatar, spoke at length on diabetes, its management and impact on cardiovascular disease during a recent meeting of the Doha chapter of Indian Medical Association (IMA).
Dr Triggle provided data indicating the growing global burden of diabetes that currently affects nearly 400mn people worldwide with a predicted 50% increase in
prevalence by 2030.
The number of people living with, and dying of, diabetes across the world is increasing dramatically. Dr Triggle quoted a recent editorial in the scientific journal, Nature, which said the prevalence of diabetes in Qatar was 23% for adults. It seems that as countries become richer, people eat a more sugar- and fat-rich diet and are less physically active. As a result, the incidence of diabetes rises.
The Indian Islamic Association (IIA) hosted the event for the doctors and their families. IIA president KT Abdul Rehman spoke on the medical camp scheduled for April 12 and invited members of the Indian Doctors Club & IMA-Q to make it a success.
Dr Pareeth Rawther presented a memento to the speaker. Dr Jojie Mathews compered the programme while Dr Rajeeth Shetty proposed the vote of thanks.
