Patient falls off hospital window, dies
A 70-year-old man recovering from head injuries died when he fell from the window of a new block at the Government Stanley hospital in Chennai.
Hospital staff said Subramani who had been given an injection had gone to the toilet a few doors away from his ward on the fifth floor. They claim he may have slipped while looking through 2ft-high glass windows over which grills had not been installed.
In another incident, two patients were injured when a ceiling fan in the cardiology department of the government Rajaji Hospital in Madurai fell on them last week.
This was the second fan to fall in the hospital in two months. However no police complaint was registered in either case.
Man arrested over woman’s brutal murder
Yasser Arafat, 24, suspected of the February 21 brutal murder of his 54-year-old neighbour Sarojini in Coimbatore, was arrested in Vishakapatnam in Andhra Pradesh last week.
Arafat allegedly butchered Sarojini’s body and stuffed it into two suitcases inside his apartment. His motive had been to rob her jewels. The murder did not come to light for some days as Sarojini’s family thought that she had gone to visit relatives. Finally they alerted police when a putrid smell came from Arafat’s empty apartment.
Police said Arafat had no accomplice and he had planned to commit suicide. He was estranged from his family in Kerala and was living on money he got after selling the stolen jewellery.
Police traced him through his cell phone records.
Many killed in road acidents
Several people died in separate accidents last week.
In Dharmapuri, four female engineering students died and 15 were injured when two college buses collided at Pennagram. Police said rash driving caused the accident in which both drivers escaped unharmed.
In Tiruchy, five of a family were killed when their car hit a stationary trailer truck at Valanadu.
Yashpal Gandhi, a resident of Mahrashtra, had been driving the car while returning from a pilgrimage of several South Indian temples. Police suspect he had slept on the wheel and failed to notice the truck.
In the third accident, 17 people travelling in a government bus were injured when the vehicle toppled over at Aranthangi in Pudukottai district.
Two women die of acid attack
Two women died of acid attacks last week.
J Vidya, 21, suffered acid burns when she fell into a puddle of the liquid thrown by her colleague Vijaya Bhaskar at her office in Adambakkam in Chennai.
She had reportedly refused to marry him. Vidya died of multiple organ failure 25 days after the attack.
In a separate incident, Gomathi, a 22-year-old housewife died when her husband and his parents forced her to drink cleaning acid at Vellore. They had been reportedly harassing her family for more dowry.
AC double-decker train on trial run
The trial run of an air-conditioned double-decker train between Chennai and Bangalore was held last week.
Designed and developed at the Rail Coach factory at Kapurthala in Punjab, the train has 12 compartments with a seating capacity of 120 in each. The decks will be connected by staircases, have automatic doors and safety equipment. The train will run at 160km per hour and may commence operations in two months after a few technical details are fine tuned.
