The film tells the story of Najem, an Iraqi man from the city of Najaf who led a popular uprising against the British occupation in 1918 and who was eventually condemned to death for killing a British officer. The Iraqi Ministry of Culture has put up $4.7mn through to next year, enough to fund 21 movies ranging from full-length features to shorts and documentaries.
