Georgetown University students who have been recognised for academic excellence
Georgetown University’s School of Foreign Service in Qatar (SFS-Q) has held an Honours Dinner for students who obtained a GPA of 3.5 and above this past fall semester.
The gathering took place in the Georgetown Building in Education City and was an opportunity to recognise students who went the extra mile in their commitment to academic excellence.
The Dean’s Honours List is a tradition kept in universities to signal outstanding performance amongst students throughout the academic year. First Honours indicates the highest level of achievement and requires a grade point average of 3.9 and above, Second Honours is a title awarded for great achievement, necessitating a GPA of 3.7 and above and the Dean’s List is a designation for those students who have obtained an honorable standing of 3.5 and above in the course of their semester of studies.
The 2012 First Honours recipients include: Al J. al-Thani, Noora E. al-Mannai, Touhami Abi, Mohamed Khalil, Farah I. Mallah, Salma Mousa, Reem T. Joudi, Lamia A. Adi, and Al Johara H. al-Thani.
SFS-Q’s Dean, Gerd Nonneman, the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs, Daniel Stoll, Dean for Student Development, Brendan Hill and Assistant Dean for Academic Affairs were all in attendance to recognise the hard work of SFS-Q students and assisted in the distribution of certificates to the honourees, bearing their names.
Two students, Lamia Adi and Al Johara al-Thani, received a perfect grade point average of 4.0 in their fall semester coursework, securing their place in a rarefied group of scholastic outliers.
Many more hard-working award recipients received the distinction of Second Honours and made the Dean’s List. The Dean’s Honours are reserved for full-time students with the required GPA, however, several part-time SFS-Q students had an outstanding record, and were also recognised at the event, with Kham N. Nang scoring a GPA of 4.0, and Nadim K. al-Rifai and Safiuallah Taye being granted Second Honours.
Director of Communications Moamer Qazafi was also in attendance at the event and noted: “It was wonderful joining the students to share in the joy of receiving such exemplary accolades before our week of commencement activities. We proudly cheered on the success of the seniors and also learned about their experiences while at SFS-Q.”
The Honours Dinner precedes SFS-Q’s Tropaia Awards Ceremony, where Georgetown University celebrates the outstanding achievements of its graduating students, faculty and staff. Scheduled to be held two days before SFS-Q’s Commencement, this awards ceremony recognises graduating seniors who have demonstrated academic leadership and accomplishment during their time at Georgetown.
In addition to acknowledging academic honours, SFS-Q also recognises students and faculty with special prizes for achievement as voted by the students. This year, SFS-Q is set to induct a new outstanding roster of graduating students into distinctions designated for the best grade point averages, honours theses, Certificates in Arab and Regional Studies, Certificates in American Studies and overall excellence.
