True to its promise, Souq Waqif features wholesome shows and entertainment for all – and a lot more is in store in the coming days.
First destination is the Smurfs Village. Its puppet show and musical play kept children amused as the characters perform on stage.
“These shows teach and inculcate family values like obedience and respect to parents,” says general manager Sirine Abi Rached.
She stressed that it had become “an absolute must-visit for any family, and a source of delight for every kid in Doha. We anticipate huge numbers of visitors and a fantastic atmosphere for all.”
Most of the kids were busy watching the shows while some of them preferred to play at the giant slides.
“This is their world and we have to let them enjoy it,” said an Egyptian father. One of his daughters, face-painted, was busy colouring a Smurf’s book.
The Bahoor World for the Qatar Marine Festival and Science Summer Camps for Qatar Scientific Club, two organisers specialising children’s shows, brought The Smurfs Village kids’ zone to Souq Waqif. It will be open to children and families from 4pm to 9pm daily from February 7-21.
Just outside the village is a stage where various performances are being held. It starts with the Slinky show that catches the attention of passersby. Wearing a colourful and flexible suit, the performer extends his arms and legs and creates a unique shape. Then the shape changes again while moving from one direction to another.
The next show wows everyone. All eyes are on the two talented white parrots who bow to the audience before they perform. As instructed by their trainer, they jump from one bar to another. The bigger parrot knows how to pick and shoot a small basketball to the net. It also plays soccer. What else? They can climb a small stair and then slide through a flat bar just like any other kid can do at the Smurf’s Village playground.
The astounding African circus follows. Four performers amuse the crowd with their acrobatics and precise balancing.
While walking along the main street, you will meet the “Magnificent Mirror Men” who roam around the heritage district and welcomes tourists, nationals, parents and children for a photo opportunity.
The festival also features the “sensational silhouette” and the “marvellous magic” shows at the Al Rayan Theatre for QR20. Kids and even adults could also try the “astonishing air dive” just near the human cannonball show.
One day more and the much-awaited “Dolphin and Seal show” will take off and it is expected to draw thousands of spectators.
