Oil and gas giants ExxonMobil and the Qatar Olympic Committee have unveiled a new partnership in support of National Sport Day.

The three-year long deal was announced at a press conference by His Excellency Sheikh Saoud bin Abdulrahman al-Thani, Secretary General of the Qatar Olympic Committee, and Bert Cahir, President & General Manager of ExxonMobil Qatar Inc.

“We thank Mr Cahir for his support and leadership in making ExxonMobil Qatar and Official Sponsor of the National Sport Day” said Sheikh Saoud. “It is an honour and a privilege to welcome them on board this prestigious initiative adopted by His Highness the Heir Apparent Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani.” Sheikh Saoud highlighted the important role ExxonMobil played in Sport in Qatar in the last few years, a role that shows the commitment of the company in the country on a social level.

Cahir expressed his excitement, on behalf of ExxonMobile, to be able to support what he defined as an important and wide-reaching community initiative geared towards promoting an active and healthy lifestyle among Qatar residents.

“Energy development is more than oil and gas production” said Cahir. “It is about delivering sustainable, long term benefits for local communities, and there is no more meaningful event for this than the National Sport Day.”

ExxonMobil shares Qatar’s view that elevating the country’s status in the international sport arena will help highlight opportunities for long-term investment in the country, with the commitment to elite sports filtering down to the grassroots and playing an important role for the population of Qatar.

The co-operation between the National Sport Day and ExxonMobil will also develop the key values of camaraderie, sportsmanship and friendship which are shared by both parts and play a role in the building of awareness about the health benefits of regular activity.

The National Sport day is celebrated every second Tuesday of February and is an initiative adopted by HH Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani, the Deputy Emir and Heir Apparent.
