The National Sport Day celebrations will last until February 16 at several locations in Qatar, including the West Bay Sport Zone and Corniche.

Apart from the athletics, basketball 3X3, table tennis and gymnastics programmes that have been announced recently, four more popular sports activities have been finalised.

Children can play at four mini-tennis courts that will soon be placed at the Sport Zone. The courts will be open to public from 9am to 9pm with a two-hour exhibition performance by members of Qatar’s National team between 10am and 11am and 4pm and 5pm.

Qatar’s most successful national team, Men’s Handball, will be in the spotlight at the Sport Zone, as members of the squad who recently represented the country at the World Championships in Spain, will reveal to youngsters the secrets of the sport in a two separate one-hour sessions, between 9am and 10am, and 7pm and 8pm.

Mini handball courts will be set up. There are plans to introduce a knock out tournament, if more than eight teams register.

In association with the National Shooting & Archery Federations, all those who are interested to check their shooting accuracy will have a try out at a special designed tent. Laser guns will be installed, daring ambitious shooters to hit bull’s eye towards targets. The venue will stay open from 9am to 9pm, with the national team experts show off to be held between 11am and noon, and 6pm and 7pm.

Weightlifting national team coaches and athletes will demonstrate between 11am and noon, and from 7pm to 8pm.

The National Sport day, celebrated every second Tuesday of February, is an initiative adopted by HH Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani, the Deputy Emir and Heir Apparent.

Across the country, ministries, government departments, public and private sector organisations and sports clubs will be organising sporting activities for all on February 12.

The event aims to create awareness about sports and its health benefits.
