Anupam Kher in LA to attend awards event
Bollywood actor Anupam Kher, who plays Doctor Patel in David O Russell’s Silver Linings Playbook (SLP), is in Los Angeles to attend the 19th Annual Screen Actors Guild Award (SAG). The Hollywood film has won the nomination for Outstanding Performance by a cast in a Motion Picture and Kher is a part of the film along with actors Robert De Niro, Bradley Cooper, Jennifer Lawrence, Chris Tucker and Jacki Weaver. The award function will take place at Shrine Exposition Centre in Los Angeles, according to a statement.
Amusement expo to be held in New Delhi
More than 120 exhibitors from across 30 countries will participate in the 13th edition of Amusement Expo, starting tomorrow at Pragati Maidan, and the event is expected to boost the country’s Rs27bn amusement industry. To be hosted by the Indian Association of Amusement Parks and Industries (IAAPI), the three-day expo will have participants from 30 countries including Argentina, Canada, China, Germany, Hong Kong, Italy, Japan, Russia, Singapore, Spain, Thailand, the United Arab Emirates, Britain and the US, an official said. The IAAPI, a non-profit organisation established in January 1999, represents the interests of a diverse range of amusement and leisure business in India.
Cop kills colleague inside police station
A policeman shot dead a colleague inside a police station near Bangalore, an official said. Constable Anand Kumar, 45, reportedly shot dead sub-inspector Vijay Kumar, 38, with his service rifle after being denied leave and change of duty, police said. Vijay Kumar died on way to hospital. “Vijay Kumar was shot dead by Anand Kumar in Rajanukunte police station after a heated argument. We are investigating the incident,” Inspector General of Police Amar Kumar Pandey said. Anand Kumar has been arrested. “We will seek Anand Kumar’s custody from court within 24 hours and interrogate him to find out what provoked him to fire three rounds from his service rifle at Vijay Kumar,” Pandey said.
Kerala govt seeks to boost coir industry
Kerala has stepped up efforts to market coir at the global and country level and is making efforts to ensure its domestic sale doubles to Rs50bn in the next five years, a minister said yesterday. “A large and virtually untapped market for coir exists within the country which could potentially drive the resurgence of Kerala’s coir industry,” Minister for Revenue and Coir Adoor Prakash said in Thiruvananthapuram. Kerala, the largest manufacturer of coir, has been able to tap into less than 5% of the domestic market potential. “Coir products manufactured in Kerala are in demand in nearly every state and we must take advantage of the opportunity this presents,” the minister said.
Dharmendra fine, busy celebrating son’s birthday
Nothing has happened to Bollywood actor Dharmendra, a source said, adding he was busy celebrating the birthday of his younger son Bobby Deol, who turned 46 yesterday. There were reports that Dharmendra escaped injuries after falling during the shooting for Yamla Pagla Deewana 2. But the source said: “He is absolutely fine. It was just a minor accident.” Directed by Sangeeth Sivan, Yamla Pagla Deewana 2 features Dharmendra along with his sons Sunny and Bobby. Anupam Kher too is in the cast of the fun drama, slated for a June 7 release.
Leopard kills Mumbai boy
Barely 24 hours after a prowling leopard was trapped alive, an eight-year-old boy was mauled to death by a wildcat in Goregaon late Saturday, police said yesterday.The victim, Saurabh T Yadav was playing with his friends in Adarsh Nagar, bordering the thick forests of Aarey Milk Colony in Goregaon east of northwest Mumbai.
Suddenly, a leopard leaped out and attacked Saurabh. His shocked friends managed to escape and alerted the family and police.After more than two hours of search by the Forest Department and a police rescue team, the boy’s mangled remains was found in the deep jungles, nearly a kilometre away, an official said. The incident happened barely hours after a prowling leopard was trapped in a cage by the Forest Department and later released into the Sanjay Gandhi National Park (SGNP).
Telugu director Bapu in hospital
Just a day after being named for the Padma Shri, veteran Telugu director Bapu aka Sattiraju Lakshmi Narayana was taken to hospital after he complained of uneasiness. However, his brother says there is nothing to worry. The 79-year-old Bapu was admitted to the Star Hospital in Hyderabad on Saturday night after he said he was feeling uneasy. “There’s absolutely nothing to worry. People thronged his house in Hyderabad after they came to know that he was awarded the Padma Shri. He couldn’t take so much of attention and thus started feeling uneasy,” Shankaranarayana said. “I spoke to my brother this morning and he is doing fine. The doctors have advised him rest in the hospital,” he added. Tourism Minister and actor Chiranjeevi and veteran producer Allu Aravind visited Bapu in the hospital. Bapu started making films in 1967 with Sakshi. In a career spanning over four decades, he has directed many Telugu films and five of them won National Awards.
